July First
Follow Jesus

“And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him” Matthew 9:9. Matthew was sitting at the receipt of custom when Jesus passed by. He was lying in his blood, when Jesus said, “Live.” How wonderful is the grace of the Lord Jesus. Some of you may be living in an evil calling, or in your sins. Look up, the Lord Jesus this night may turn His eye upon you.
A simple word is blessed — “Follow Me.” No argument. It is probable he had heard of Christ, heard Him preach, seen the preceding miracle; still he was at his old trade, till Jesus said, “Follow Me.” A little word reached his heart. We often make great mistakes — often make use of long arguments to bring people to Christ.
Often we make use of long high-sounding words, and expect them to be blessed; whereas it is the simple exhibition of Christ that is carried home by the Spirit.
